The American Bar Association (ABA) is the only nationally recognized institution that accredits law schools. No online law schools have ABA accreditation, but many accredited law school programs use online technologies. Both doctorate and master’s programs are available in this manner, and all courses require an in-person presence. However, ABA-accredited paralegal programs are available both fully online and as hybrids.
Washington Lee University School of Law
This school offers a traditional Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master of Laws (LL.M.) and combined J.D./Master of Healthcare Administration program. The Law Media Center at Washington Lee School of Law in Lexington, Virginia, will record classes by request and, with the instructor’s permission, post the videos online. These videos can be seen on-campus, through the school’s VPN network or off-campus with a broadband connection. Additionally, some special law school events are broadcast live online, but can only be viewed by on-campus students.
Harvard Law School
Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which boasts J.D. as well as graduate law school degrees, offers online law courses through edX, an online education consortium. Anyone can take these courses for free, but no credit is awarded. Additionally, Harvard provides videotaping of law classes for students with disabilities, students on major religious holidays and students who are undergoing clerkship interviews.
Students may also make audio recordings of classes for absent classmates with the instructor’s permission. Other online services include e-mail accounts, an iCommons course management system, online file management system, online registrar services and internal websites.
University of Michigan Law School
The computing, network and audio-visual infrastructure at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, helps students communicate, conduct legal research and enhance their educational experience. In addition to a Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) and an LL.M., this school offers a Juris Doctor, with more than 10 dual degree programs available, including those combining a J.D. with an MBA, a Ph.D., Master of Social Work or Master of Public Policy degree.
Among the online services available at the University of Michigan Law School is class participation, which lets students log in to a website and indicate they’re prepared to participate in discussion for a particular class meeting. The exam administration function gives students online access to exam IDs and pass/fail election, as well as allowing them to download exam software.
Although accredited law schools aren’t available online, many do use online technologies. Those interested in pursuing a career in law can find fully online and hybrid programs in paralegal studies accredited by the ABA.
