The Wits School of Law LLB programme gives students access to a range of legal careers

The Wits School of Law offers the LLB programme in two streams

  1. A two-year LLB stream where students choose to first do a BA (Law) or a B Com (Law) which feeds into the LLB
  2. A three-year LLB stream (for students who decide, after completing a first degree, to study law)

The closing date for applications has been extended to 30 November 2017.

Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • ID Document and certified copy
  • Matric certificate and certified copy
  • University transcript and certified copy
  • R100 application fee (If posting or couriering your application please include proof of payment slip, for more detils on how to pay please click here)

Applications for the LLB Programme can be made in person at Wits University’s student enrollment cente. The student enrollment centre is located on the concourse level of Soloman Mahlangu House, 3 Jorissen Streeet, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Admissions criteria for the two-year or three-year stream is as follows:

  • An undergraduate degree
  • 60% average in final year of study

Fields of Study for the LLB Programme

Students enter this stream when they decide to complete a BA (Law) or a B Com (Law) before entering the LLB. Since students are given credit (totaling not more than 50% of the credits for the LLB) for the law courses completed in the BA or B Com degrees towards the LLB, they can complete the LLB in two years.

  • Law of Persons
  • Family Law
  • Constitutional Law
  • Constitutional Law: The Bill of Rights
  • Law of Delict
  • Public International Law
  • Property Law
  • Business Entities
  • Civil Procedure
  • Jurisprudence
  • Criminal Procedure
  • Law of Evidence
  • Practical Legal Studies
  • Administrative Law
  • Independent Research Essay
  • 5 Electives

Students enter this stream after having completed a bachelor’s degree without doing any law courses. Since they have had an opportunity to develop their critical and analytical skills in a first degree, they are equipped to deal with legal studies in an effective manner and may finish the LLB in three years.
