The New Jersey special education offices are responsible for supervising and monitoring the implementation of the federal requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) in local education agencies (LEAs) which include all school districts.В The state special education offices provide leadership to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and to establish standards that promote improved outcomes for students with disabilities.В In order to serve parents and students who receive special education services, the special education policies and procedures office provides the following:

In assisting districts with professional development to help improve student achievement, the special education professional development office provides the following services:

  • Technical assistance, resources, and instructional materials to teachers, administrators, staff and parents across the state;
  • Support to districts seeking to implement the New Jersey Tiered System of Supports (NJTSS) or to enhance multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) that are already in place;
  • Assistance with building capacity in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Positive Behavior Supports (PBS);
  • Professional development in the following key areas:В providing the least restrictive environment (LRE); transition of students from school to adulthood; implementing high-quality services for preschool and school-age children with disabilities; developing individualized education programs (IEPs); and accessing individual rights and entitlements; and
  • Funding of four Learning Resource Centers (LRCs) that provide a variety of services to families and education professionals.
